Summer in Texas: Texans Training Camp

in Texas

I really don’t always think about food. But as I was standing there watching the d-line do some light drill work on day 2 of camp, all I could think about was frito pie and beer. At 8:45 in the morning.

Shoulder pads and whistles. Conditioning drills and helmets. Fantasy football drafts and trash talking with a Cowboys fan. There really is no greater sound in this world than the helmet and shoulder pads of two linemen colliding. It’s… magical.

And there’s no sight more panic-inducing than seeing your star receiver watching the rest of the team practice with a towel on his head.

Can you believe it’s August already? School starts in about 3 weeks and there’s almost an end in sight to the oppressive heat and humidity… sort of. Almost. That usually comes in November.

But the best part of late summer in Texas? FOOTBALL. And after the most exciting Texans season ever, and most disappointing Colts off-season ever, we are seriously ready for some football in southeast Texas.

I’ve been a huge football fan for… as long as I can remember. My dad wouldn’t have it any other way. I think he had only two goals for me: 1) to make sure that I knew more about football by age 11 than most grown men; 2) go to college. He paraded his little girls around clad in Luv Ya Blue and I Still Luv Bum t-shirts.

I can only hope to be half as great a football mom as he was a dad 🙂

But I think we’re off to a decent start.

  • This post made me tear up a bit. My mind conjured up images of Rudy, and Frito Pie. Can’t wait for Fantasy draft, thinking about picking up another league this year! Come oooooon September…

  • Frito pie sounds good…Your first few pictures totally reminds me of FNL – working my way through season 4.

  • Ahhh, love the start of football season! So much fun! And you’ve totally reminded me that I still haven’t made Frito pie, I must do that this fall!

  • Super cute, Shawnda! What a cute little football family you have! 😉

  • Some of my most treasured memories with my dad are the times we sat crowded around the TV watching football. He patiently put up with me and my incessant questions. Wait, why was it bad that he just got tackled behind that imaginary line?? His patience payed off because now I’m about as big a football and basketball fan as you can get. And I still love spending Saturdays and Sundays next to dad, yelling at the screen and cheering for our team. Glad to see you’re raising your daughter in that same tradition. 🙂 It’s a special one.

  • Do you have ANY idea how utterly jealous I am?? I have yet to get to a training camp. But I am most certainly looking forward to this season. I only hope that Watt and Johnson will be healthy!! On a completely unrelated note, I think we were separated at birth. Summer in Houston means football for me and I will trash talk with a Cowboys fan until the cows come home ;P If y’all go to the games, I think it’d be really really neat to meet you. You know, from the opposite side of the screen 🙂

I’m SO ready for football to start! Our guys (Baylor) started practice yesterday. First game is September 2nd, less than a month. We’re already getting our tailgating gear ready and I’ve got to decide on our menu.

I would like to watch those boys practice!

  • I am right there with ya. I’ve been going to Broncos games with my dad for 20 years, and it is one of my most favorite things to do. I love love love football because of him. We’re going to training camp next Monday, and I cannot wait to see Manning! I’m very excited for this season and thankful for our season tickets. I’m ready for football! By the way, I won’t forget when the Texans started and stole our offensive coordinator for the head coach job. Lame!

I grew up watching football, the Charges specifically. My Dad being a transplant to San Diego did what any good transplant does and rooted for the home team. Me? Not so much; Raiders all the way! Now that my Dad is gone, I quietly root for the Chargers as their wins would have brought my Dad a ton of joy.

The 2 men in my life are gearing up for a rip roaring Broncos season. Yea, I route for whatever team is playing against the Broncos. I’m evil like that and love the tension it creates. As for Frito pie, it is a staple in my house now. Even my finicky 7 year old laps that up like ice cream. 🙂
