Houston-Style Green Salsa from The Homesick Texan Cookbook

I’ve been waiting for this day for over 2 years. Literally! In the fall of 2009, I had the pleasure of testing recipes for Lisa Fain’s cookbook, The Homesick Texan, one of my very favorite blogs, turned cookbook. And just shy of two weeks ago, a copy showed up in my mailbox. Christmas in September. With a high over 100. Typical, Texas.

I must admit, I am a recovering cookbook addict. A year ago, I had shelves and shelves full of cookbooks. Our first home in Houston was built in the early 70’s and had several built-in cookbook shelves. It had history and character. And the world’s ugliest smokey mirrored-walled wet bar. But did I mention all the bookshelves?

Our new home in the suburbs was built 10 years ago and has four walls. And ceilings. And that’s about it. We have far less book storage so only the very, very best and most used get to stay. And this book is one of those.

The Homesick Texan Cookbook

In southeast Texas, we have an absolutely wonderful mish-mash of cultures – a little Cajun, a little East Texas, amazingly fresh seafood from the Gulf, a little influence from the Hill Country, and a lot of influence from Mexico. And The Homesick Texan Cookbook celebrates all of it, from kolache to pork tacos, from chocolate pie to queso flameado. Each turn of the page brought a bigger and bigger smile. Lisa may live in a big city up north now, but her book does Texas and our foods proud.

Houston-Style Green Salsa

Tomatillos and avocado make a creamy, tangy salsa familiar to fans of Houston's Tex-Mex scene.

  • 3/4 lb fresh tomatillos (~4) or 11 oz canned tomatillos, drained
  • 1 large avocado
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1-2 serrano peppers, seeds removed (or left in!)
  • Juice of 1/2 a lime
  • 1/4 cup cilantro
  • Salt

  1. If using fresh tomatillos, remove the husks drop them whole into a pot of boiling water for 5 minutes to soften. Using a slotted spoon or tongs, transfer them from the pot to the blender.
  2. Remove the pit and scoop out the avocado and add it to the blender along with the garlic, peppers, and lime juice.
  3. Blend until you reach desired consistency.
  4. Add cilantro and a pinch of salt, pulsing once or twice to combine.
  5. Leftovers will keep several days in the fridge.

Yields: ~2 cups

I’m gonna have to go with Enchiladas Suizas on this one. Yum… smothered in salsa verde and sour cream. Boy, do I miss home (San Diego)!

  • Seetha

I have to go with Chuy’s creamy jalapeno dip. That thing is like crack to me.

  • Sarah R

    Salsa–any kind–red, green, chunky, smooth… it’s all good!

  • Kate

This green salsa sounds awesome! Considering I have to eat some salsa every day, I will definitely be trying it. Thanks!

  • Chicken enchiladas…smothered in cheese and homemade enchilada sauce!

  • We love salsa around here. In fact I’m heading to the kitchen to make some right now.

  • That salsa looks amazing! Lovely shots too.

    What a great giveaway!

  • My favorite is a chimichanga. Can you go wrong with that deep fried goodness with a dollop of sour cream and guacamole on top? No.
Chili rellenos are a close second!

  • Jama

I love guacamole. I could eat it on eveything (granted it’d make for a weird dessert, but I might still be willing to try it)

  • Sheri B

I love all tex-mex food but for me it doesn’t get much better than homemade roasted tomato salsa, fresh guacamole, and chips!!!

  • Meagan

Guacamole and queso are my favorites! Also, you can never go wrong with DIY taco night πŸ™‚

My husband will love this recipe, green salsa is his go to Tex Mex topping.

  • jpetroroy

    I love enchiladas!

  • Chips with either salsa, queso or guacamole- or all three!

  • If I had to pick one thing, its probably chicken fajitas.

  • Maxine R.

I don’t know if this is considered Tex-Mex, but we lived in Texas for about a year and I got hooked on Red Beans and Rice with smoke sausage. I love Mexican Rice too.

  • My favorite is more like a trio that is a must have every time I eat Tex-Mex….chips, queso, & salsa! I can’t get enough of them!!!

  • Jill

I love chicken enchiladas topped with lots of sour cream!

  • I love queso blanco! I’m actually eating some right now.

  • Mikki

I love fajitas but I would really love to try a good enchilada. It’s something I’ve had maybe only once. πŸ™‚

  • Vader's Mom

I’m a fan of chicken flautas, but I’m slowly being won over to Shiner Bock Brisket.

  • I have no idea what chow chow is! Enlighten me. My favorite is probably a grilled veggie burrito with black beans and guac!

  • Kim

Queso dip! (But I’m gonna have to try that green salsa recipe. I love tomatillos, and adding avocado sounds delicious.)

  • Tim M

  • Jennifer

All Mexican food is my favorite but if I have to pick one then salsa.

  • Jennifer H

  • Stacie

There’s nothing like a great savory queso. MMMMMMMMM!!!

  • Amanda Thompson

    Texas Chili and Cornbread!!

  • True Texas chili! To me this means no beans and surprising to some no tomatoes. A very close runner up is cheese enchiladas.

  • On of the local places near where I went to school serves a cheese and avocado enchilada lightly covered in mole sauce and sour cream. Holy cow is it good!

  • I love all things Tex-Mex or Mexican but my favorites would have to be enchiladas, empanadas and queso. Yummm

  • Gabrielle

I love me some “nasty nachos” … you know the kind, a plate full of chips with ALL the toppings. Yum.

  • Every time I hear the term “tex mex” I think how good it sounds, but I never really know what it entails. My mind just goes to tacos and burritos, but then, where’s the Tex? If I win, I’ll definitely be expanding my knowledge! Going by my admittedly poor knowledge of tex mex foods, I’d have to say my favorite that I’ve had so far would be a classic veggie burrito – spicy if possible!

  • CoreyLiza

I adooooore chile rellenos! Ever since moving up up and away from NM to MD, I’ve searching for a good one, but still haven’t found any. And all of my attempts to make them haven’t exactly been successes… =P

  • Rebecca Alvarado

I have to say my favorite Tex-Mex food is cheese enchiladas and my favorite Texas food is a Chicken Fried Steak. πŸ™‚ From what I have seen of the Homesick Texan blog, this cookbook will be awesome!

Cheese enchiladas from Lopez in Houston. Best enchiladas ever.

  • Salsa and queso blanco. I could eat it every day!

    lanzaelizabeth77 at gmail dot com

  • Oooh this salsa looks so yummy, but like nothing I’ve ever had before! I’m definitely going to have to try it out, I’m sure I’ll love it!

I’m a HUGE fan of Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine so it’s going to be hard to narrow it down to just one favorite, but I’d say that very high on my list of favs are some really yummy Fajitas with all the fixin’s!

Thanks for the chance to win!

  • TJ

    Chips and salsa

  • Erin

This salsa looks delicious! To me, there’s nothing better than a good burrito with chicken, beans, and salsa.

  • I can never resist a quesadilla, though chips and salsa are a close second. I don’t know what chow chow is either…

  • Amber

Queso! It is something that I had never had until we moved to Austin. Now that we are back in Seattle, I have not been able to find a place that serves it.

  • Ginny

I love it all, but really, my favorite? The white dip from Chuy’s. I know. But I sure do miss Houston, especially the Montrose area where I went to school.

  • Deena C.

Fajitas and guacamole are my 2 most fave Mexican foods! I could eat these just about everyday and not get tired of either one.

As an aside, I also love chow chow on my pinto beans! I grew up eating it and I still love it. πŸ™‚

  • creamy jalapeno–and this is definitely tex-mex–more tex than mex.

  • Heather Noelle

I love gold old cheese enchiladas!

  • I taught myself to hand-make corn tortillas while living in Corpus Christi, TX, and eventually bought an antique tortilla press and comal for traditional cooking. Those were some of the best gifts I gave to my fiancee and myself — prep and food-wise!

  • Allison C

I love Tex-Mex food! Since I have to pick one I would have to say enchiladas. It is what I try at every new tex-mex restaurant as my “standard”. I really want to try using tomatillos and this looks like a great recipe for my first time!

  • molly

  • I’m always confused on what’s considered Tex-Mex food and what’s considered New Mexican food. But I like any sort of mesh of beans, meat, cheese, avocado, and tortillas.

  • Robyn

    Hands down, guacamole!!

  • Amy M

All Mexican dips — queso blanco, guacamole, salsa, 7 layer dip, tomatillo salsa, pico de gallo, etc! Anything you can put wih tortilla chips…I love it all!

  • The book sounds wonderful. I’m also trying to limit my cookbook purchasing but I haven’t been able to let go of any of the ones I have. Even the ones I haven’t used for year. What if I need that 1 recipe in a few years? Can’t.let.go.

I love all the variations of fresh salsas…..just add a bowl of freshly fried tortilla chips and some watermelon agua fresca, and I’m good to go πŸ™‚

  • What Tex-Mex-Etc. food DON’T I love? I make some pretty mean enchiladas…at least I think that’s what they’re called, but technically, who knows. Those paired with homemade guac and salsa = heaven. And don’t forget the jalapenos!

I think I have to go with Pollo Fundido, a dish made by a restaurant back home (in PA) by a Peruvian guy who studied cuisine in Mexico…it’s AMAZING! Seasoned chicken breast and monterrey jack cheese wrapped in a tortilla, grilled so the cheese is melty deliciousness, then topped with a sour cream-cheese sauce that is DIVINE. Gosh – having to think about this right before lunchtime is making my stomach growl! Though I love rellenos, enchiladas, salsa (eating cups at a time), quesadillas, and green chili, I’d have to pick guacamole as my favorite!! Jalapeno and Monterrey Jack grits! OR Jalapeno cornbread!

  • Love Homesick Texan!

  • Queso! From Kerbey Lane’s to-die-for guac and salsa infused Kerbey Queso to Chuy’s happy hour bar queso, to a homemade white and yellow cheese fusion, there seems to be endless ways to interpret melted cheese. And don’t get me started on the tortilla chips.

  • Brooke R.

I’ve lived in Texas for only two years now, but have become a huge fan all things Tex-Mex. Carne Guisada, enchiladas suizas, queso (Torchy’s is by far the best) and fresh tortillas. Yum!

  • Christina Almond

Gosh…such a hard question! We just moved to Texas a few months ago and I am in love with trying every Tex-Mex, Mexican, and related food that I can get my hands on! πŸ˜‰ Really though…I just have to still love the basic taco…I’ve had some great ones here! • Christina Z.

Does Texas Caviar count or am I showing my So. California roots?

  • Catherine

I could eat Mexican food everyday – in fact, there was a time in my life when I did. We officed across the street from Austin’s Las Manitas (man, i miss that restaurant) and went there for lunch almost every day. Walk through the kitchen, out onto the back patio – limonada and a gordita – heaven. But Queso – the trashy kind made from Velveeta and RoTel tomatoes – is my crack.

  • I think I could eat refried beans with cheese every day of my life. YUM.

  • Leah Harper

chow chow pinto beans with hot crumbled cornbread is my heaven. feel bad for my east/west coast friends who haven’t experienced it!

I might have to find some tonight for dinner! I would love to get this cookbook. I”m definitely going to add it to my wish list (if I don’t win it).

Tex-Mex is my favorite cuisine, so it’s all good to me. LOVE chile rellenos and tamales. Guacamole is pretty hard to beat, though.

  • Quesadillas!

  • Adrienne Yancey

I lived in Texas for five years and would still move back in a heart beat. I lived in Houston and in Austin and I LOVE kolaches, tex-mex, barbecue and everything in between. Thanks for hosting this give-away. I would love a copy of the book!

  • MichellefromTX

Tamales, hands down. I want to learn how to make these, but it’s an all day thing. πŸ™ I can only get them in restaurants here in Maryland, but it’s not the same when eating them in TX.

  • Elvi

I love salsa verde. Hard to find around here, so the recipe looks great! Though actually tomatillos are hard to find, too…

  • I’m in love with every single spicy thing, and Tex Mex fills that love fully!

  • Rebecca McCoy

Um, all? No, seriously – all. But I think I could live on nothing but spinach quesadillas for the rest of my life.

  • Cecilia

Mole, guacamole, Herradura margaritas all the time. Especially mole!

  • Chuy’s creamy jalapeno! But enchiladas suizas are a pretty darn close second. And I love chips and salsa. Any tex-mex is good with me!

  • D.J.

I lived in Northern California for 8 years and I missed Tex Mex so much. Every visit home (Houston) I HAD to trek to Casa Ole for their queso dip. OMG, it is so good it hurts. I missed really good enchiladas and … mmm … sopapillas. Ok…I’m drooling now. Thanks for sharing!!!

  • M. Pennell

OR ? Sorry…that’s an impossible choice ! I love my chicken fried. Steak as much as I love my enchiladas!

  • Anything with chorizo!!! Breakfast tacos, dips, flautas, anything! Yum.

Salsa or street tacos. Or, street tacos with salsa.

  • Mellisa W.

all of it. I like it all. May I have more please. Thanks!

  • Barry

Recently got turned on to carnitas, and it’s hard for me to roder anything else when I’m at a Mexican restaurant. Really excited about this cookbook, too. I’m a longtime fan of the Homesick Texan blog, so seeing that Lisa was putting out a cookbook was pretty cool…

  • Susan

Chips and queso…preferably from Chuy’s, but I’ve been known to salivate over the Velveeta junk. Chips.and.queso…..

  • Jo

a good salsa with fresh chips.

  • I love carnitas!!! Traveled to Texas for work a few months ago and had such amazing Tex Mex and authentic Mexican food. Yum!

  • Elyse

I can’t wait to read (really now, drool) over this book!!! Chimichangas with a side of avocado!

  • Elizabeth

sour cream chicken enchiladas – yum!

  • Tessa

oh my gosh, where to start?! Nothing beats a great queso (Matt’s Bob Armstrong in Dallas, Maudie’s in Austin) but then there are perfectly crunchy flautas (Rafa’s in Dallas) or fajitas with potato slices (Mi Cocina). Basically nothing beats Tex-Mex!!!

  • Kristina

    Mmm… arepas…. mmm…

  • Claire

Yum! My favorite Mexican dish is probably a veggie burrito bowl…followed in a close second by Tex-Mex style nachos. πŸ˜‰

  • Erin

Guacamole, since I have to pick only one….as a former Houston resident transplanted to the midwest, I must get this cookbook! I was just telling someone about the wonders of kolaches yesterday. PS My mom adores chow chow, which is scarce here πŸ™‚

  • I like burritoes with lots of salsa and sour cream on top. <3

  • This flavor combo sounds amazing! I love Migas or any type of egg dish that has some tex-mex flavors in it…

  • Jessie

I am an enchilada fiend! I’ll take them andyway I can.

  • Mell

This recipe looks awesome, it’s now on my list for this weekend. For us, we love anything with tomatillo salsa.

  • Amy P.

Tacos with their combination of crunchy, soft, & savory

  • sarah w

the ninfa’s green sauce has long been a favorite. you just can’t get it up north!

  • Heather

I would have to say the best Mexican food I had was in a small restaurant (and by small, I mean it was in their living room). They had the best guacamole I have ever tasted. Ever since, I’ve been on the quest for that level of greatness. Oh, that and baja style fish tacos – I love them!

  • Amy

    How can I choose?!
    Tex-Mex: Creamy Salsa Verde
Texan: Chicken Fried Steak with cream gravy

    Now I’m salivating. Thanks.

  • michelle

chunky salsa…I could eat it with a spoon….and often do πŸ™‚

  • Kaili

  • Ariel

    Chicken enchiladas are delicious!

  • I cannot WAIT to get my hands on this cookbook. I’d love to win it, but will buy it no matter what!

My favorite are tamales. My grandmother lived in San Antonio, and getting tamales down there was always such a treat. One year my aunt ordered tamales for the day after Thanksgiving…and had them shipped overnight to Virginia. Heaven.

  • Rugelk74

As a daughter of Houston who’s been replanted north, I certainly fall into “Homesick Texan” category. I miss going to any grocery store and grabbing a jar of “Hell on the Red Party Dip.”

  • michelle n.

  • Lindsey N

Oh how I miss Frito Chili Pie!!

  • Athena R

    I love mushroom quesadillas.

  • Lindsey

    queso makes everything better!

  • How in the world do I choose just one? Seriously…hardest question I’ve had to ponder in a while. (I actually read this yesterday and have been thinking about my answer since then.) I’m going to go with guacamole made with healthy doses of onion, garlic, lime, salt, tomato, and chipotle peppers.

  • Bre

Really good sausage (typically from Elgin, Tx) with potato salad, or pigs in the blanket with jalapenos and cheese.

  • Rachel

How can I narrow down to just one favorite? What I get depends on where I’m ordering. At home, I make chimichangas, enchiladas, and fajitas. What I need is a good refried bean recipe to go with your amazing tortilla recipe.

  • Melissa

chips and salsa, though chicken enchiladas are a close second

  • Amy

Beef fajitas. They’re an addiction, I need them at least once ever couple weeks.

  • Jynielle Wells

Our family loves taco soup! And if it would cool off I could make some πŸ™‚

  • Laura G

I am a Homesick Texan! (Living in Alabama) …and I love ALL foods Mexican- or Tex-Mex. Enchiladas Verdes or Fish Tacos are two of my favorites. Of course paired with tons of salsa!

  • Jen M

I’ve been making roasted tomato and jalapeno salsa lately (lots of garden fresh produce) and it has moved to the top of my list although a close second would be fish tacos! This book looks fantastic!

  • Coleen

I love restaurant chips and salsa. My husband and I have tried every store bought salsa and nothing came close. I now pick up a pint one or two times a week from our favorite restaurant. I have the list of ingredients and all of them ready to go. I may have to try this recipe as well.

  • Natalie

Tortilla soup, enchiladas, and salsa!!!! mmmm!

  • Nicole-Lynn

My favorite tex mex food is chicken nachos!

  • I love it all! Spicy, Mex-or-Mex-infused foods are my absolute favorite!!! I love the HomeSick Texan Blog myself!!

  • Emily Toner

My favorite has got to be a big bowl of queso! I moved from Houston to Washington, DC a few years ago and they just can’t do it like the Texans can! I miss it terribly!

*Sent again because I saw an error in my email address!*

  • Lauren

definitely queso! i don’t think i could live in a place where queso was not readily available. yum!

  • Gwyn

When I lived in Texas I didn’t fully appreciate the wonderful foods I ate on a daily basis, but now that I have moved far, far away, I would say that my favorite Tex-mex food is definitely enchiladas!

  • Kathleen

FRITO PIE!!!!! oh yum yum yum πŸ™‚

  • YAY!! I can’t wait for this cookbook! This Texas girl is a sucker for simple homemade salsa (and homemade chips if possible!)

  • I love blue corn enchiladas! I would just say enchiladas but I like the cool look of the blue corn.

  • Pat

I’m gonna have to go with either Gorditas or Carnitas with fresh corn tortillas and chile (salsa), makes me miss home, El Paso!

  • Christy

    Anything Queso! Ok, with guacamole….

  • I had fresh, homemade tortillas for the first time while in Mexico last month. I think I’m ruined. I’ll have to start making them myself now….

    That salsa looks absolutely delicious!

  • Amber Lessa

Chile Relleno is my FAVORITE! This salsa looks like I would bathe in it.

  • Hands down, guacamole – because I can put it on all those other tasty Tex-Mex and Mexican foods.

  • Holly H.

I’m a huge fan of chicken flautas! I love the Homesick Texan – she’s the best!!

  • Debbie

My latest favorite Mexican dish is Molcajete! I wish I knew how to make it. It’s the most delicious mexican stew/soup I’ve ever had.
Mexican Food is by far my most often go to meal. I craved chips and salsa the whole time I was pregnant. I swear my four children have salsa running through their veins!

  • Carly Chapman

Ahhh, how to choose! Probably for a meal I’d have to go with Texan Chili, but homemade guacamole is seriously amazing. Like as in I have a problem when I’m eating it. To the point where I require an intervention (or an empty bowl) in order to stop.
I want this book to give to my friend for her birthday. We live abroad and she’s a Texas native. Hopefully if I giventhis to her for her birthday, she’ll cook some Tex-Mex for me! πŸ™‚

  • Gretch

homemade tortillas and green salsa and anything with cheese…

  • Lindsey

Quesadilla especial. I grew up near the Mexico border and they make them there. I can’t find them anywhere else! It is basically, a deep fried quesadilla!!

  • Teslaca

Enchiladas suiza are my favorite. I love them! But just about anything involving cheese and beans hits the top of my list too.

  • I have to go with enchiladas – good, authentic enchiladas. Not those made with canned sauce, but ones made with love from stock and dried chiles, homemade tortillas and cheese – lots of cheese.

  • Jamie

    Homemade tortillas are my weakness!

  • robin

    Definitely enchiladas.

  • I’m a Homesick Texan too! Well, a former transplant. My first two stops when I visit Austin are for Chuy’s Jalepeno Ranch Dip and Lambert’s Frito Pie. To.Die.For!!! I miss Texas πŸ™

  • Lyndsey Prince

Tacos w/ onion and cilantro topped with lime and valentina (mexican hot sauce) YUMMMY (licking my lips)

  • I love all Mexican food but my favorite is menudo and sopapillas
