Garden Fridays: now with more blueberries!

Garden

Blueberries

And grapevines!

It’s winter, so all we’ve really got going at the moment are blueberries and citrus. Besides an herb box. And a single stray broccoli plant that popped up out of no where.

We picked up two cabernet grapevines last weekend and are pretty excited about them. We’ve been making wine for 5 years and decided to test the waters of grape production over the next couple of years. (And I bet you can tell what our current retirement dream is, huh?)

Because of the mild weather (hello, 75 degrees in mid-January!), our blueberry bushes have not only flowered but we’ve actually got blueberries growing already. I’m not sure what that means for the spring or if cold weather actually does set in… but for now, there’s a batch of blueberry muffins in the backyard.

Winter Citrus

The citrus are mostly thriving. We’ve got 2-3 dozen key limes on one tree, a hundred blooms on the other key lime tree, half a dozen pink lemons, half a dozen Meyers. One of the Meyers appears to be in distress, but I’m not sure what’s wrong with it or if it’s going to make it. The fig, avocado, and pomegranate trees are quiet for the winter.

Within the next couple of weeks, I’ll be start seedlings indoors for our spring garden and help out with a Gardening 101 get-together with some friends. We’ll be back in the full swing of things by early March 🙂
