Jailhouse Potato Cinnamon Rolls

in Bread, Breakfast, Project Pastry Queen

Katy chose this week’s Project Pastry Queen challenge: Jailhouse Potato Cinnamon Rolls, a potato-infused dough filled with brown sugar and pecans. And I blew it.

I don’t know what happened but right before my dough was supposed to be resting, I still had a pancake-like batter instead of dough. I’m a flour weigher and I know they don’t weigh their baked goodie flour at Rather Sweet. I’m not sure that would have made that much a difference.

I dumped every ounce of flour in the house into the mixer bowl, hoping that each extra half-cup would make a difference. It was like shooting a bb gun at a freight train. Or maybe sending a fourth grader straight at Brian Cushing? Copious amounts of flour later, including some of a bag of whole wheat I found hidden behind a box of girl scout cookies (those Caramel de Lites were therapy), I had an oddly textured cinnamon roll that tasted okay. The filling was great and they looked mostly okay. The dough itself? Eh.

Check out the other Project Pastry Queen members to see what Jailhouse Potato Cinnamon rolls are supposed to look like. Thanks Katy! These really kicked my butt 😛

  • Well, they look good! You should give them a try some other time because they really were delicious! Thanks for warning me about the dough – mine still wasn’t very firm but it held up okay.

  • Even if these cinnamon rolls didn’t turn out exactly how you had planned, they still do look very yummy! I’ve had my share of kitchen mishaps and I have to say, I think sometimes having a little disaster here and there is a good thing. It means that there’s still something new to learn and that there’s room for improvement. Kudos to you for persevering and trying something new! 🙂

  • I’m so sorry to hear these cinnamon rolls didn’t go quite as planned, but it’s always a humbling – and good – thing to share your downfalls, too! Cinnamon rolls are very tricky, but my Cinnamon Roll Muffins are a lot easier. Check them out, if you’d like:http://comfortofcooking.blogspot.com/2010/07/cinnamon-roll-muffins-giveaway.html

    Better luck next time!

  • Holy Moly. I just found your blog and you had me hooked at the first picture. Looks like awesome stuff! I’ll be back! 🙂

  • I love cinnamon rolls with a passion! These look sooo good! : )

  • We were all struggling with this one… the potato just made the dough too soft! nice to be part of the gang though! 🙂

  • i made these but haven’t posted them yet – it may actually be a few weeks b/c i had 2 big batches, one that was baked and promptly eaten before photos could be taken and another that’s in the freezer. ANYWAY…i didn’t have quite the problem with a pancake-ish batter-dough but my dough was really soft and really sticky, requiring another 1/2-1 cup of flour as i rolled it. the rolls themselves were exceptional and i was really really pleased with how the baked-up dough turned out. so i don’t think it was you…something is amiss with the recipe. and here i thought that 9 cups of flour would be way too much to start with…

  • Potato in the dough sounds intriguing, even if they didn’t really turn out!

I am a super fan of cinnamon, let alone cinnamon rolls. For me cinnamon rolls are the classic way to have a hearty feel-at-home breakfast. It takes the senses somewhere else before heading straight into a long day at work 🙂

I just wanted to comment on your trouble with this recipe. I have made these several times and i have always had to add way more flour than the recipe calls for. I’m beginning to wonder if the amount of flour in the book isn’t a typo. I’m glad to see it wasn’t just my problem.
