Red Velvet Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting

How perfect are red velvet cupcakes for Valentine’s Day? They’re strikingly dark red, the color of love. And not coincidentally, the color of food coloring 🙂

I’ve tried other recipes but I still always come back to The Pastry Queen’s cupcake as my favorite. It’s the way a buttermilk cake is supposed to be: moist, tender, and tangy.

If you’re a little geeky like us and interested in this kind of thing, you should check out The Way the Cookie Crumbles. Bridget has done a comparison of several red velvet recipes. I’ve tried almost all of them. And I think that you should, too 🙂

  • Perfect for the holiday- great job!

  • Not suprisingly, this is my favorite out of all the variations I’ve tried as well. I love how you did the spiky frosting!

  • Oh, I too enjoyed Bridget’s comparison post:)

More amazing pics too! LOVE the spiky frosting look.

  • My favorite red velvet cupcake to date has been Martha’s version…but there’s always room for more taste testing in my life! Looks so vibrant.

  • This recipe is so good! Now that I’ve made the recipe from Saveur a few more times, I’m ready to move on to this one for a while!

  • I love how you frosted them – so fun!

  • Congrats on Foodbuzz Top 9!

I do NOT Bake. Seriously! However, I had the motivation to pull out my mother-in laws 1972 Sunbeam mixer from the basement storage, head down to the store for all of these lovely ingredients and follow your directions to a tee! I am so proud of myself as they came out PERFECT! Now I am trying to think of all the other things I can make with all the new ingredients I now store in my cabinet!!

  • Those look amazing!! So you tried all of Bridget’s cupcakes, and liked this one the best? I love the comparison posts she does, but having you endorse one is good enoug for me too 🙂

  • Red velvet is my husband’s favorite! Yours are beautiful 🙂

hi! can i substitute cake flour for AP flour? should i add some baking powder if i use AP flour instead?

    thanks!

    • Yes! Just put 1 Tbsp cornstarch in the 1-cup measuring cup before spooning in the AP flour. 1 cup of cake flour = 1 Tbsp cornstarch + 15 Tbsp AP flour.
