This week’s Project Pastry Queen challenge was selected by Amanda of Homekeeping Adventure: Beer bread.
Beer and bread. Those are two of my favorite things. Two things I have tried to give up in the name of smaller pants. And have happily failed 🙂
This was the perfect recipe for this week. I’ve been so busy getting ready for a smash-and-grab trip to Indianapolis and wrapping up as much of my Christmas baking (and presents!) as early as possible that I needed a quick and easy dish. The recipe required me to use nothing more than a handful of ingredients, a bowl, a wooden spoon, and a bottle of your favorite beer to add to the batter – and an extra one to drink 🙂
Favorite being key here. I actually thought all beer flavor would be lost after nearly an hour in the oven but I was wrong. I used an IPA and could really taste and smell the hops in the finished product. A little more than I wanted to but it mellowed out by day #2 and was great warmed with butter. I should have just grabbed a glass of the honey wheat we have on tap in the garage and left the IPA for my husband to drink 🙂
I threw in half a log of goat cheese and some chives from the garden for a little variety. I can’t wait to try it with a Shiner and some fresh jalapenos and cheddar!
You can check out the full recipe on Amanda’s site and the rest of the Project Pastry Queen members’ take here. Next week, we’re going all Christmasy with a cranberry cake!
I was surprised, too, at how long lasting the beer flavor was– I used a plain old Sam Adams (I had to save the Winter Lager and the Old Fezziwig Ale from the Sam Adams’ Winter Variety Pack for myself to drink!) and this morning it had a very light yet distinct sour taste from the beer.
Very interesting! I love IPAs, though, so I’ll have to try that one next time!
Looks awesome! I couldn’t really taste the beer in the final product but I used a cheapie beer so that’s probably for the best. 😉 I bet the goat cheese was delicious in it!
Oh what an excellent combo! Sounds delicious. Although I’ve never met a beer bread I didn’t like 😉
see now these are the kinds of breads i dig.
I laughed at this, because I can totally relate! Beer and bread always take priority over small pants in my book as well! 😀
My mom requested for me to bake bread for Christmas this year (as well as to make an entire vegetarian meal for myself) and I just don’t feel like dealing with yeast. Can you say perfect timing? Because I can.
I’m definitely trying your version with the cherve and chives next time. Your photography is so beautiful!
Beer AND goat cheese? Sign me up!
Goat cheese, what a fantastic addition! I love beer bread, and I love that it’s kinda beery (but not really), but more flavorful then anything!
How much goat cheese and chives did you use? There are so many different size logs of goat cheese, and I wouldn’t know how to guess how much chives … if you could share some more detailed direction, that would be great!
4-5 oz of goat cheese (I usually buy either the 8 oz or 10 oz logs) and 1/4-1/3 cup chives.
