Hello, Summer!

in Fruit, Garden

We spent the last 8 days on the funnest, most awesome vacation we’ve ever taken. Eating Mickey Mouse-shaped Ice Cream Sandwiches like it was my job (and it kinda was), princess-ing all the things, princessing them some more, and riding roller coasters.

13 family members under one large roof. And there wasn’t a single argument, much less a stabbing. Successful. Epically so.

What I wasn’t doing? Certainly not thinking about my garden! But I didn’t have to – my friend Kelly garden-sat for us. She was paid in all the produce she could pick.

9+ lbs of Juliet and San Marzano tomatoes, alone, I hear.

The first thing I did this morning was fill one of those large, city-issued garbage cans full of prunings from the tomatillo and tomato plants, and then I spotted a beautiful golden globe peaking out from under the green canopy.

A cantaloupe.

My knife slid through the chilled fruit like it was butter. It was absolutely a perfect welcome home.

Well, perfect right after a sprinkling of salt. Fess up – who else salts their watermelon and cantaloupe?

Love your blog! I am a regular and apologize that I comment on blogs infrequently ( except my daughters’!!!). I just had to chime in, I love salt on my melon. How lucky you are to be harvesting from your garden. Here, in central New York State, we are weeks away from fresh tomatoes!!

Yummm – I’ve been enjoying all the summer melons lately. I’m also a fan of a pinch of salt on my melons – but all my non-Texan friends think it’s extremely weird.

  • Happy summer! I don’t put salt on my fruit but believe it or not, I think I could eat an entire watermelon and cantaloupe by myself!

  • You know that’s right – although, Jon has always thought it was weird. Who’s the weirdo now? Probably still me. Heh.

  • Your garden always seems to produce a few weeks ahead of mine.We planted cantelope and watermelon this year for the first time and I can’t wait to try them fresh from the garden.

    • I plant the second we get passed our last freeze date… which is really like 3 weeks before the *real* last freeze date 🙂

  • Welcome home, foodie bride family! Sounds like y’all had an amazing time. I took a vacation in March, but I could already go for another! 😉 Gorgeous homegrown cantaloupe you have there, too. Looks like it made for a luscious first breakfast back after vacationing. Enjoy your week ahead!

  • You picked a great week to go to Disney! The weather wasn’t too, too hot, and the rain was kept at a minimum. My favorite treats are the chocolate covered Mickey ice cream bars.

I have always eaten salt on watermelon, cantaloupe and honeydews. I get a lot of sideways glances but I don’t care.
