Dr. Seuss's Cat in the Hat Birthday Party

So, as of Tuesday, I’ll have a 2 year old. I’m not really sure how that happened.

I mean I kind of do. I was there after all. But still. A 2 year old. That goes to preschool. And gymnastics. And can roll her eyes.

Right now, she’s obsessed with most things Dr. Seuss and Sesame Street. Every night, she asks for “Sam” (Green Eggs and Ham) or “Cat” (The Cat in the Hat) as her bedtime story. She’s also obsessed with water towers, solo cups, and travel-sized toiletries.

We all have our things, I guess.

Dr. Seuss's Cat in the Hat Birthday Party

At least one of those things made it easy to put together her 2nd birthday party!

We went with The Cat in the Hat for the party theme and coordinating colors red and white (Cat’s hat) and aqua (Thing 1 and Thing 2’s hair…sort of). We used Inkscape (a free open-source SVG program that’s similar to Illustrator) for the paper products, with inspiration from other Dr. Seuss-inspired parties found through Pinterest.

(Because I have gotten many requests for the food and bottle labels since posting this party, a $10 donation that will in turn be donated to the local preschool’s spring and fall book drives will get you the printable files for the birthday banner, Thing 1 or 2 cupcake circles, address labels, blue & red food labels, blue & red Thank You tags, water bottle labels, and a 4-page coloring book. Email me for more information.)

We sat out a copy of Dr. Seuss’ Happy Birthday to You for party guests to sign and Cat in the Hat coloring books for the crayon-aged guests. The little ones also got their very own Cat Hat to take home after posing for some of the cutest pictures πŸ™‚

On the food table, we had a goldfish in a teapot and a stuffed Cat in the Hat doll. A framed button monogram and birthday banner hung on the wall behind the table, which included:

We suspended red and blue paper lanterns (Target clearance!) over the dessert table, which included:

I bought aqua and red paper straws to go along with the drinks:

We’ll be sharing the new recipes and some of the craft projects in the upcoming week and updating the links on this post. In the meantime, I have a dining room to de-Seuss.

  • How fabulous! This is absolutely gorgeous, it should be a magazine spread. Thanks for the inspiration, and happy birthday to the foodie toddler!

  • I’m absolutely blown away by all of these ideas!! I’ll have to file them away for when we actually have a kid πŸ™‚ Happy birthday to the toddler!

  • What a fun party!! That’s one lucky little 2 year old πŸ™‚ Happy Birthday to her!

  • Emily

That is so adorable! Very creative and colorful!

My 3yo loves water towers too. He used to tell us there was spaghetti or matzo balls or Cheerios in it, but as he’s gotten older it’s mostly “just water,” which is a little sad. I loved some of the crazy things he’d come up with.

  • Shawnda, your party looks so fun! I wish I was a kid again. All your treats are perfectly spot on with the Dr. Suess colors. Beautiful job.

  • Ahhh love this!! So cute!

  • Awesome job, Shawnda! Your little gal is quite lucky πŸ™‚

  • How fun! Lily loves Cat in the Hat, too. I can’t imagine how much planning went into this party!

  • What a great looking party–Y’all did such a great job, you didn’t miss any details! Happy birthday to your sweet little girl πŸ™‚

Such a cute display! I’m planning on a Dr. Seuss 1st birthday for my son and I’m gathering ideas for the dessert table… I absolutely love your french macarons.. is there a recipe for them?

  • This is absolutely the cutest birthday party theme I have seen yet!

  • Catherine

What amazing party decorations! You should definitely make your child a photo album of the party because all of your hard work needs to be remembered! It might even be cool to have a birthday party only scrapbook with additions every year πŸ™‚

  • Oh my goodness! I love your party ideas! How on earth did you have time to do all of that AND keep up with the blog, AND take care of the toddler?? Did you make the cream soda and the cherry limeade too?? Very impressive and creative!

  • You are super mom. That’s all there is to it. This is awesome! I might just borrow some of your ideas for Abby’s 9th (ACK!) birthday party this year.

  • Honeybee

That looks amazing!! Our daughter turned two last saturday! I can’t say I put quite as much work into the party. I made a fantastic (I thought :D) chocolate cake with chocolate glaze and smarties (the european kind – something like m&ms). The birthday girl stuck to the decoration and didn’t touch the cake- why eat cake when you can fill up on coloured chocolate? πŸ˜‰ Oh, and then she ate about three of the ham-filled croissants my mouther brought. Your sandwiches would have gone down a treat, too, I’m sure! We had a great time. Time just flies, doesn’t it? Two years…

  • What a great party! Those cupcakes are too cute.

  • Eek! How fabulous–this librarian is loving your theme and how it all played out. I think the cupcakes are my favorite… I’ll have to share that with my fellow librarians for future programming for preschoolers!

And yes, Pinterest is beyond addicting…

  • What a precious party, Shawnda! I already feel like a bad mom (I’ll never be able to keep up with this) and don’t even have kids yet! Don’t take that the wrong way; it’s meant as a compliment to your serious birthday party-throwing skills.

  • The cupcakes are too darling!! I hope she liked her party! And congratulations to you on 2 years of motherhood!

  • This is so adorable!! It should be featured on the Amy Atlas blog! Have you ever seen it? It’s pretty amazing πŸ˜€

  • Rosa

    This looks absolutely AMAZING!

  • Awesome party, girl! Everything is perfect!

  • Wow, how cute! You did a great job- each little detail adds such fun!

Can you tell me where you got the soda from?

    • The soda was Frostie’s brand, I purchased it at Central Market in Houston. I was originally planning to get Jones Soda but Frostie’s was a little less expensive.

  • Kalreshia

I love everything u did with the theme I have twins and the theme is thing 1 and thing 2 I was wondering if possible can u please share where u got the coloring books as well as the lollipops and the straws thank you very much

    • I bought the red and aqua swirl lollipops from Amazon (the vendor name is funExpress). I made the coloring books myself with 80lb card stock, a printer, and a little rubber cement for the binding. The images I found by googling Cat in the Hat coloring pages.

  • Absolutely Adorable. I must show this to my daughter as an idea for my granddaughter’s birthday party. Your rock, so glad I found you. You have a new follower!

  • Angela

I love your macaroons! I found them and Pinterest πŸ™‚ I’m planning a Dr. Suess 2nd birthday party set for July. We have a few of the same ideas but I’m adding a touch of yellow to our party. I love the coloring books too. Do yo mind sharing where found them?

    • Angela, I actually made the coloring books myself. I found the images by googling “Cat in the Hat coloring pages” and then printed them on 80lb card stock. My stapler doesn’t unfold so I dabbed a little rubber cement on the outer edges of the folded binding to hold them together rather than using staples. Hope that helps!

  • Karleshia

Sorry, I’m so late thanking you for the information having twin babies and working keeps me very busy but, I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. Can you believe I tried to order the sodas I’m outta CT the price of the sodas was $29 for two cases which was ok shipping on th other hand was $60 just crazy but I really thank you for all your ideas and help

  • Adrienne

Love this idea…how did you do the mini coloring books?

  • Nichole Rincon

Loved all your decor and food ideas for a cat in the hat party. I was wondering where you found the blue and red straws.

    • Thanks, Nichole! I got the straws from Amazon.

      • Nichole Rincon

Thanks!! I also was wondering if you made the Happy Birthday banner. I am throwing my son a Cat in the Hat bday party for his 2nd birthday and I thank you for so many great ideas and decor!!

  • Ashley

Love your Birthday party theme. We are doing this theme for our 1 year old on the 1st.. I was wondering about your cupcakes. We too wanted to do cupckaes but were having trouble with what to put on top as the “hair” for thing1 and thing2 I read a lot of different sites that said they had trouble with it melting after an our and turning into a glob of blue sugar mess…did your do the same? if not what did you use/how did you get yours to last? Thanks for sharing!

    • Yeah, you can’t put the cotton candy on too far ahead of time. I didn’t top the cupcakes until after the party started. It was also during the winter so the air was relatively dry. If I had to serve the cupcakes during a super humid Texas summer, I’d just top them immediately before serving.

  • laura

awesome! everything looks so great! i plan on having my 3 childrens birthday party this summer and doing the dr.seuss theme. where did you get the color books? would you happen to have any links or help on making one? thanks so much! you did GREAT!!!

    • I just printed two images per page (landscape orientation) on the front and back of a couple of pages. I folded them in half like a book and dotted a little rubber cement on the spines of each fold to hold it all together. You can skip that rubber cement part if you have a stapler.

  • vanesa

I love what you did for this party!!! So fun! I have a 2 year old little girl who loves the cat in the hat…I was wondering where did you find the paper plates, and straws…I can’t seem to find anything to match the aqua color in stores. Thanks for any tips you can give me!!!!

    • Thanks! The plates I got at Party City on the “non-character, plain color” aisle. The straws I ordered from Amazon – I’ve never seen those in any stores.

  • Bree

This is a beautifully executed layout! I love it. I found your page by searching for birthday party ideas for my twin boys’ 2nd birthday. I love this idea and will try my best to get the ball rolling within the next two months I have left to plan. Thanks for the pics. Feel free to email me tips if you have a chance.

  • Heather

Where did you get the blue and red soda from? I would love to have them at my son’s party! Great ideas – thanks so much for sharing!

  • Brittany

Do you mind sharing how you made the Frosties? There is no link to how to make them & my niece is having a party & I’ve suggested this theme.

    • Frosties is a brand of soda – check your local stores, they might carry it or Jones soda (another brand that makes colorful sodas).

  • April f

The layout is very nice, where did you find the red and blue drinks at?? Can’t seen to find any in the matching color

    • Central Market and the larger HEBs here in Houston carry both Jones Soda and Frosties (both brands come in red and blue).

  • Daphna

I love all your ideas!! I am celebrating my twins 1st bday actually HERE in Houston!! Would you sell me some of your gorgeous macaroons???

  • Sami

I LOVE this theme! You did such a great job. Where did you get all your food labels and labels for the cookies? Thanks! πŸ™‚

    • Thanks! I actually made the labels and tags using “Inkscape” – it’s a free program very similar to Illustrator (which is not so free).

  • Hi please please please can you contact me regarding those labels. Love the theme it’s amazing! So now I’m copying haha!

  • Kelly

Where did you find Frostie’s Blue Cream Soda?

  • Shannon

This is perfect and exactly what I was searching for! I was even going to make those sandwiches before I saw this and seeing how great they went, only confirmed the decision! I can’t wait to try the cupcakes and the Macarons! Hope our party turns out as great as yours!
