Guava Margaritas. The Guavarita!

Guava Margaritas

In my pre-Foodie Bride days, my roommate and I shared an apartment in “No Man’s Land.” It was almost downtown, but not quite. It was also not a part of the 5 other well-known, nearby areas.

But it was pouring distance from The Satellite Lounge (RIP), across the street from the original Star Pizza, and across the bayou from Teala’s. The location, despite not belonging to an identifiable area, was killer.

Teala’s had a list of fun margarita flavors that included one of our favorites: The Guavarita. We spent many a spring and summer afternoon on the patio scoping out potential future husbands, eating way too many chips, and drinking way, way too many Guavaritas.

Life was so tough back then!

We use canned Guava Nectar for the cocktails because that’s what the restaurant used back then. You’ll find it either in the canned juice aisle or the International or Mexican Foods section (we buy Goya brand). I regularly double and triple the “homemade margarita mix” portion of the recipe (what you see below is a half-recipe) and just keep the extras in a pitcher in the fridge – it makes going after a Tuesday night cocktail really easy.

Probably too easy 🙂

Guava Margaritas

Guavaritas made with fresh lime juice and guava nectar.


  • For the homemade margarita mix:
  • 1/4 cup sugar (or the equivalent in your favorite sweetener)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup fresh squeezed lime juice (~8-12 limes)
  • For the margarita:
  • 1/2 cup guava nectar
  • 3/4 cup silver tequila
  • 1/3 cup orange liqueur
  • Lime wedges, for serving
  • Salt, optional


  1. Heat water and sugar in a small sauce pan until completely dissolved and the water is clear. Let cool.
  2. Pour into a pitcher with lime juice. Homemade lime mix done!
  3. Add guava nectar, tequila, and orange liqueur, stirring well.
  4. Run the lime wedges around the rims of 4 glasses and dip in salt.
  5. Fill with ice and divide the margaritas between the glasses.


Yields: 4 servings

  • My step-dad makes margaritas that are, essentially, a giant glass of tequila with a small splash of lime and some ice. Thus, I’ve never been a huge fan of margaritas. But this one? I’m absolutely making this one over the weekend. It looks beyond refreshing and tasty. I want some right now!

    I love all your margarita recipes, with the grapefruit my favorite, but I was a little disappointed with these. I didn’t think the guava flavor came out at all and it wasn’t nearly as pink as yours. I made a second batch and replaced the simple syrup part of the “margarita mix” with guava juice and I thought they were much better. Maybe my guava nectar isn’t as strong flavored as the one you use? What brand do you use?

    • We use Goya brand guava nectar. It’s really thick and really pink. It’s not something I would drink straight without diluting with club soda first. Or margarita 🙂

    On a hot summer night I had one can of frozen pink lemonade but no fresh lemons and a bunch of people comming over. I used the whole can instead of lemon juice and simple syrope. I doubled the rest of the ingredients. Oh my!!!guavarita nirvana. Thanks
