Chipotle Hamburger Buns

Hamburger buns are one of our favorite breads to make. I typically bake a batch each month and then put them in the freezer for burger nights. We have several trusty recipes that we turn to over and over, but every once in a while, we like to try something new.

My parents sold an awesome jalapeno and cheddar roll at their bakery when I was younger that I absolutely loved using it for burgers. So when I saw a chipotle bun on the menu at the burger place near the Foodie Groom’s office, I was intrigued. But not intrigued enough to order it, I had already made up my mind 🙂

Burger buns are just another excuse to add an extra layer of flavor to dinner. I added chopped chipotle and a hefty dose of adobo sauce to a standard burger bun recipe. The buns are slightly sweet, with a hint of chipotle and subtle warmth after each bite, but it shouldn’t be enough to scare away the heat haters (the Foodie Baby ate them).

Chipotle Hamburger Buns

Soft, tender hamburger buns infused with warm chipotles.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup very warm water, divided
  • 1 pkg yeast
  • 2 Tbsp sugar
  • 4 Tbsp melted butter, divided
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 chipotles, chopped + 2-3 Tbsp adobo sauce (from canned chipotles in adobo)
  • 3 - 4 cups flour
  • 1 1/4 tsp salt
  • Sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Put 1/2 cup water into the bowl of your stand mixer fitted with the dough hook and stir in the sugar. Sprinkle 1 package of yeast over top and let rest 10 minutes.
  2. Add 2 Tbsp melted butter, egg, chopped chipotles, adobo sauce, and remaining 1/4 cup water.
  3. Add 3 cups flour and salt and turn mixer on to low.
  4. Knead 5-7 minutes, until dough comes together and forms a soft, smooth ball. (Dough should clean the sides of the bowl, add additional flour if necessary.)
  5. Cover the dough, and let it rise for 1 to 2 hours, or until doubled.
  6. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and divide it into 8 equal pieces.
  7. Shape each piece into a round ball and flatten with your palm to 3 inches across. Place the buns on a lightly greased or parchment-lined baking sheet, cover, and let rise for an hour.
  8. Preheat oven to 375.
  9. Brush the buns with 1/2 Tbsp of the melted butter and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  10. Bake 15 - 18 minutes, until golden.
  11. Remove them from the oven, and brush with the remaining melted butter.
  12. Let buns cool before slicing.

  • These look great!

  • amazing idea! How have I never thought of infusing flavor into my hamburger buns??

  • There’s nothing like conditioning your kid early for the good things (chipotle) in life. 🙂

  • Your parents had a bakery when you were little? That is SO cool! I love the idea to infuse some heat into the buns, gotta try that on my next batch.

    • Yes! I have 3 siblings so it was lots of cheap labor for them, lots of early mornings for me 🙂

  • You did WHAT? Oh you are my hero. I have some chipotles in the fridge and I know what to do with them..now. 😛 These look so good! I’m picturing them with a sweet potato black bean burger. Swoon.

  • Sounds like my kind of burger bun! We love to add a little heat to just about anything – this is a must make 🙂

What is your process for freezing and reheating the buns? I assume you freeze them after they are cooled, but do you defrost before toasting or just toast them frozen?

    • I cool them completely, put them in a large ziploc bag in a single layer, and put the bag in the freezer. I defrost them in the microwave.

  • Yum! My husband always loves some heat. I have yet to make buns, but these may have persuaded me!

  • These sound SO good. I love the type of heat chipotles have and when they’re in adobo, the flavor is even better. Still haven’t gotten around to making my own hamburger buns, but would love to give these a go.

  • I just made portobello burgers, so I def need to try these homemade buns. They look beautiful!!!

  • We’re pleased to be the springboard for your twist on hamburger buns. Love your suggestion to make them once a month and freeze extras for future burger nights (or any hearty sandwich for that matter!). Happy Baking and Grilling! Irene @ KAF

  • What a great idea! A whole other dimension to hamburgers – so simple, but so good! Thanks!
